The Gateway of India

The Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is one of the majestic and splendid landmarks of Mumbai which was built to venerate the visit of the British Monarch, King George V and Queen Mary. Paradoxically, when the British Raj ended in 1947, the last British ship sailed to England from this wonderful monument. The 26 meter high structure, stands with four turrets and complex lattice work imprinted into the yellow basalt stone.

The gateway of India, a grandeur archway, is the starting point for most of the local and foreign visitors to explore the Mumbai city. Designed by the architect George Wittet, the first stone of the Gateway of India was laid on March 31st 1913 on the Apollo Bunder and was formally opened in the year 1924 by the then Viceroy, Earl of Reading. The total cost to construct the Gateway was approximately Rs. 21 lakhs, most of which was funded by the Government of India. The entire waterfront was realigned so that it comes in line with Gateway of India. One can enjoy the view of Mumbai’s marvelous natural harbor from the Gateway of India. The closely located statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Swami Vivekananda add charisma to the breathtaking structure of Gateway of India.
